Recognised as one of the world’s leading conducting mentors, Toby is Head of Conducting at the Royal College of Music, and directs courses and masterclasses throughout the year, especially through the Purser and Ravi Conducting Academy, and at the Vienna Opera Academy.

Fortunate to have studied with some of the greatest conducting pedagogues of all time, including George Hurst, Ilya Musin, Colin Metters and Janos Furst, Toby has always been a passionate advocate of enabling young conductors to achieve their maximum potential.

His teaching encompasses conducting technique and philosophy, musicianship, interpretation and score preparation, aural awareness, and rehearsal skills.

With a technical foundation based on both the Toscanini-Barsan and Musin techniques, he is recognised as one of the UK’s most inspiring teachers, and in January 2020 was appointed Head of Conducting at London’s Royal College of Music.

He was also founder and director of the Aberystwyth Summer MusicFest Conducting Class, and mentors selected young conductors at the Vienna Opera Academy. As well as private tuition, guest masterclasses have included work at London’s Royal Academy of Music, London Conducting Academy, Music Fermata, Sherborne Summer School of Music, and Admont Conducting Masterclasses, in Austria.
